Phoebe Gill: The Rising Star Set for Olympic Glory

Seventeen-year-old Phoebe Gill has captured the nation’s attention with her recent victory at the British Championships and her record-setting performance in the European Under-18s 800 meters. As one of the youngest British track athletes to compete in the Olympic Games in over 40 years, Gill is now a top contender for a gold medal in Paris.

When asked about her feelings about making it to the Olympics, Gill expressed her excitement, saying,

“I’m so excited to be joining all these amazing athletes. It’s going to be a memory that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

Gill’s journey to becoming a professional athlete began early.

“My first race was when I was about 9 or 10. I joined a club back in 2016 or 2017 and found my love for middle distance there because it’s so quick but also such a tactical race,” she shared. Although always a dream, Gill admitted she never truly imagined she would be competing in the Olympics by 2024.

Despite her impressive achievements and the spotlight, Gill remains unfazed by pressure.

“I don’t actually really feel the pressure because, you know, I’m 17 going into my first games. It’s the first time that I’m wearing a Great Britain shirt, and I just want to soak it all up,” she said.

Balancing rigorous training with schoolwork has been challenging, but Gill credits her supportive school environment for helping her manage.

“I’ve been really blessed. My school is very supportive in allowing me to train when I don’t have a lesson. It’s especially helpful during exam season to go out for a run or train with my group, which is great for my mental health,” she explained.

Gill also offered advice to young aspiring athletes, emphasizing the importance of not succumbing to pressure and focusing on mental health.

“Definitely don’t put any pressure on yourself because you are young and have a long career ahead if you stick with it. Don’t neglect the mental side of running because it can get difficult. I was blessed to have my coach when I struggled, and many young athletes will go through that. Building a strong foundation with your coach is essential.”

As Phoebe Gill prepares for the upcoming Olympic Games, her story inspires young athletes and sports enthusiasts alike. The nation eagerly awaits to see her compete on the world stage, fingers crossed for her success in Paris.
